In brief
Vice President JD Vance said the Iran war cost the GOP its 2026 midterm seats and argued it was not worth giving the Democrats control of Congress. Trump dismissed the criticism, saying he would launch the conflict again if needed. Vance’s comments stem from polling that shows Trump voters now consider ending the war and changing ties with Israel as priorities.
Vice President JD Vance said the Iran war caused the GOP’s loss in the 2026 midterm elections, and that taking Congress to the Democrats was not worth the gamble.
Vance’s claim came after a survey showing that among Americans who voted for former president Trump in 2024, but were planning to vote Democrat in 2026, ending the Iran conflict and revising relations with Israel were among the top four priorities.
"The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night," Vance wrote in a long post on X. He added that the conversation about the party’s future “must start there.”
Vance, a likely 2028 presidential nominee, has been a negotiator with Iran and has taken more dovish public statements on the war than several other administration officials.
Former President Donald Trump reacted to the criticism by saying, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, that he had no regrets and would launch the conflict again if necessary.
Trump told the Wall Street Journal, “I did the right thing. I would have [done it again].”
Vance described the pollster used for the data as “one of the smartest people I know” and suggested that the war’s costs could be a long‑term problem for the party.
Both sides therefore highlight internal Western opposition to the Iran conflict and its domestic political impact.
