In brief
The decision affects 5,800 contracts, leading to fears about the health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Starting this Wednesday, the U.S. State Department issued abrupt termination notices via email, halting crucial funding for global health initiatives targeting polio, H.I.V., malaria, and nutrition. The cancellations encompass around 5,800 projects previously financed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). These projects ranged from refugee camp support to life-saving vaccination programs. The terse emails announced funding termination for "convenience and the interest of the U.S. government," marking a significant end to any hopes of continuity following a freeze that left many organizations in limbo. Some projects had even received waivers, acknowledging their vital role in saving lives.Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi, executive director of the African Population and Health Research Center, expressed grave concern, stating, "People will die, but we will never know, because even the programs to count the dead are cut." This alarming stance highlights the potential devastation posed by withdrawing aid amid ongoing global health crises.
