In brief

Audrey F. shared her attempts to intervene before the tragic incident, shedding light on the misinformation that spiraled out of control and led to Paty's death.

In a Paris courtroom, the former headteacher Audrey F. detailed the shocking chain of events surrounding the beheading of Samuel Paty, a well-liked history and geography teacher, by an 18-year-old Chechen refugee in October 2020. The incident was sparked by a lie from a 13-year-old student, who misled her parents about a lesson on freedom of expression, claiming that Paty had shown "naked" images of the Prophet Muhammad. Paty had actually discussed cartoons from a satirical magazine, allowing students who felt offended to leave the classroom. Despite trying to clarify the situation, Audrey F. found herself overwhelmed when the girl's father appeared at her office alongside a local Islamist activist, demanding action against Paty. Audrey expressed her regrets, stating, "I didn't manage to protect him," during the trial of eight individuals accused of complicity in the murder. The tensions escalated with videos circulating on social media, leading to threats and police involvement. Tragically, Paty was ultimately attacked outside the school just before the school holidays. Audrey, who has since relocated to teach in China, emphasized the critical role that media misinformation played in the incident, believing that had the videos not been posted, the tragedy could have been avoided. "If there is justice, perhaps I'll manage to move on," she concluded.
