In brief
As armed groups backed by Rwanda seize territory in Congo, President Felix Tshisekedi reaches out to the U.S. and Europe for support.
In the wake of conflict over territory in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Felix Tshisekedi is seeking help from the United States and European nations by offering access to the country’s rich mineral resources. These resources include essential materials like coltan and cobalt, crucial for technology and electric vehicles, which are primarily dominated by China.Tshisekedi described the situation as being comparable to Russia's actions in Ukraine, indicating his desire for Western nations to pressure Rwanda to prevent further destabilization. He outlined that much of Congo’s metals are being exploited by Rwanda and criticized the European Union’s recent deal with Rwanda, which allows for the extraction of minerals from Congo for approximately $935 million as "an absolute scandal."By proposing a stake in Congo's mineral wealth to U.S. and European investors, Tshisekedi hopes to bolster security and stability, positioning the DRC as a critical player in the global wealth of natural resources amidst the ongoing conflict.
