In brief
A group known as the Buz Stop Boys is making waves in Ghana by tackling litter and promoting civic pride across the country.
In Ghana, where about 12,700 tonnes of waste is produced daily, the Buz Stop Boys—a diverse group of passionate individuals—have taken it upon themselves to clear towns and cities. Formed by civil engineer Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo in July 2023, this civic initiative has attracted over 40 volunteers from various professions. Regularly, they gather to clean clogged gutters, streets, and parks, hoping to ignite a cultural shift regarding waste disposal. Their inspiring efforts have even attracted the attention of celebrities like Sister Derby, who joined one of their clean-up sessions, and Shatta Wale, who raised funds through social media. Donations from politicians, such as former President John Mahama, further support their cause. With the ambition to foster change within communities, Sarfo emphasizes the need for individuals to take action, as environmental stewardship is crucial for survival. As they continue their vital work, the Buz Stop Boys send a powerful message: civic responsibility starts with us.
