In brief

Authorities are on high alert as strong winds intensify the flames, threatening the city's central business district.

Firefighters in Cape Town are facing a tough battle against a wildfire that erupted in the Table Mountain National Park, quickly moving towards the city. The fire has been raging in the Newlands area for several days but intensified overnight due to strong winds, according to local officials. Edward Bosch, spokesperson for Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, described the situation as “extensive,” although no immediate threat to downtown Cape Town was reported. As of now, about 148 acres have been scorched and trails in the park have been closed for safety. While firefighters have effectively mobilized more than 80 personnel and air support – including helicopters conducting water-bombing missions – the possibility of property damage looms as they assess the fire's size. No evacuations have been ordered yet, but residents are understandably concerned, wishing for increased preventive measures against future wildfires.
