Araceli and her family faced a daunting journey as they fled deportations in the US, attempting three times to reach Canada for safety. The experience began at the Rainbow Bridge, a symbol of unity between the two nations, which turned into a barrier after their first attempts on March 17 were unsuccessful. Despite having lived in the US for over a decade, their dreams of asylum collided with harsh immigration policies, especially under former President Trump's administration.

Araceli’s first two attempts to claim asylum were thwarted by minor document discrepancies and strict enforcement of the Safe Third Country Agreement, which requires migrants to seek asylum in the first country they enter. After facing a two-week detention in the US during their second attempt, they returned, fearful of being deported, especially when authorities separated them from Araceli’s partner. However, following legal intervention, a Canadian court allowed them a third chance to seek asylum.

On May 5, their perseverance paid off; along with their attorney, they successfully crossed the border after 12 hours of waiting, where they received a warm welcome from immigration officials. While Araceli celebrated this milestone with her children, their father remained in the US navigating through his own legal challenges. This family's ordeal reflects the heightened struggles many asylum seekers face amid changing border policies, emphasizing the harsh realities of immigrant lives in North America.
