In brief

Security forces are engaged in a tense rescue operation after separatists took control of a train, leading to the hostage situation in southern Pakistan, with demands for the release of imprisoned militants.

Pakistani security forces are facing an intense standoff with armed separatists after the Baloch Liberation Army (B.L.A.) took control of a passenger train carrying over 400 people on Tuesday. This dramatic escalation in the long-standing separatist conflict saw the militants claim they were holding at least 214 hostages, including military personnel and law enforcement officers. They have issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding the release of their jailed members within 48 hours or face dire consequences for the captives.By Wednesday morning, authorities had successfully rescued over 150 hostages, though the fate of those still held remained unclear. Officials reported that at least 27 militants had been killed during ongoing operations and the hostages might be scattered across three different locations, with some taken into the nearby mountains according to Muhammad Tallal Chaudry, the minister of state for interior. The incident marks a significant turn in the ongoing violence in southwestern Pakistan.
