Amazon cargo plane crash kills 5 in Miami
A Boeing 767‑300 cargo plane operating for Amazon Air lost control during landing at Miami International Airport, overshooting the runway and setting the aircraft on fire. Five people died and five were seriously injured, many trapped under vehicles on the tarmac.
The flight departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and slammed into the runway shortly before 2 p.m. local time (7 p.m. GMT). The crash caused several ground vehicles to be hit as well.
Fire crews arrived within minutes, battling flames that had licked the side of the wreck. A fuel leak still exists at the site, researchers noted.
Miami‑Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava urged the public to focus on the families and fighters: "Our focus is on the families, the wounded, and the ongoing response." She added that three of the injured are in critical condition and are being treated at local hospitals.
Amazon said it is working closely with local authorities and officials, offering condolences to victims and their families. The company added it would cooperate fully with the National Transportation Safety Board investigation pending the Friday news conference.
The incident occurs during one of the busiest travel times of the year, Tuesday the Labor Day holiday. The FAA has grounded all flights following the incident and the crash is under federal scrutiny.
