Amazon has informed users that it will soon stop supporting older Kindle models, leading to an outpouring of frustration from affected customers. Starting May 20, 2026, Kindles released in or before 2012 will no longer receive updates and won't be able to download new content.
Affected users reported receiving emails thanking them for their long-term support but ultimately informing them of the upcoming obsolescence of their devices. This includes early models like the Kindle Touch and certain Kindle Fire tablets. Although users can still read previously downloaded e-books, their access to the Kindle Store will be revoked, raising concerns about usability.
Amidst the backlash, Amazon noted it had supported these models for over a decade and offered users discounts on newer devices. Critics, however, lament the wastefulness of rendering up to two million devices obsolete, which some estimate could create 624 tons of electronic waste.
While some users expressed their disappointment, industry experts understand the company's perspective on evolving technology and device support. Yet, many argue that perfectly functional devices should not be discarded due to advancements in technology.--
