What Happened?

A sudden surge in the Budhi Gandaki River unleashed a flash flood that blasted through the Gorkha district in central Nepal. The flood is believed to have been caused by a landslide upstream, sending a torrent of water that ripped through field, road and even a hydropower construction camp.

The Human Toll

Army rescue teams hauled 49 people to safety. Still, five others remain missing as search parties comb the shattered roadways and empty homes.

What’s Left?

Four bridges collapsed and almost twenty houses were lost to the flood. The hydropower camp, strategically located along the river, suffered damage that threatens its future electricity output. In a country already reeling from last year’s catastrophic floods that killed thousands and left many homeless, the new disaster underscores how fragile infrastructure can be when faced with extreme weather.

Moving Forward

Local officials are demanding urgent support to rebuild damaged roads, bridges, and power facilities, and to strengthen early‑warning systems. The international community watches closely as Nepal balances the urgency of civilian aid with the longer‑term challenge of managing its flood‑prone valleys.
