In brief
As casualties rise in the Russia-Ukraine war, a dedicated military band takes on the solemn duty of honoring fallen soldiers, providing comfort to grieving families in Ukraine.
Every day, as the chilling winds blow over snow-covered cemeteries in Ukraine, a military band plays a critical role in honoring the lives of soldiers lost in the ongoing war with Russia. Each funeral is marked by solemn rituals, with an honor guard firing three shots and draping the Ukrainian flag over a soldier's coffin. The trumpet and drum echo through the air, offering a final farewell.Maj. Oleksandr Holub, who leads the band, emphasizes their responsibility: “We can’t bring them back, but we can play taps.” The band regularly visits cemeteries, where tens of thousands of soldiers have been laid to rest since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion three years ago. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that approximately 46,000 soldiers have died and more than 350,000 have been injured, though some believe these numbers may be higher. With each performance, the military band not only commemorates the bravery of the fallen but also aims to raise the morale of the living, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made. In ceremonies throughout Kyiv and its surrounding areas, their music leaves an enduring impression on mourners, lifting spirits even amid profound grief.
