A man convicted of raping and fatally beating his former manager at a Florida convenience store in 1988 is scheduled to be executed Thursday evening.
Richard Barry Randolph, 63, is set to receive a lethal injection starting at 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison near Starke. Convicted of murder, armed robbery, and sexual battery, Randolph was sentenced to death in 1989.
This execution would mark Florida’s 17th of 2025, breaking state records for total executions in a single year.
Randolph attempted to break into a safe at Handy-Way convenience store, where he previously worked. When confronted by manager Minnie Ruth McCollum, a struggle ensued that resulted in her brutal assault and eventual death after six days in a coma.
Three witnesses who saw Randolph leaving the store alerted authorities, leading to his swift arrest. Despite recent appeals, the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court denied his requests for clemency, confirming the execution date.
Florida has executed more individuals this year compared to any other state, contributing to ongoing discussions regarding the death penalty's future.
