Elephants in Trouble


Scientists think the elephants starved on tomatoes sprayed with banned pesticides. The poison—cyanide—may have made them sick and caused their deaths.


Who’s Held Responsible?



  • 3 Kenyans were arrested.

  • 1 Tanzanian was also detained.

  • All are suspected of poisoning at least 18 elephants.

  • The suspects are out on bail while the case is still in progress.


Where the Poison Came From


Tomato farms in Kimana, a gap between Amboseli and Tsavo parks, have been spraying illegal chemicals that are hard to control. That region is a corridor used by more than 2,000 elephants searching for food and water.


Why It Matters


When farmers use banned chemicals, they can harm animals that share their land. Protecting wildlife requires stricter enforcement of pesticide rules.
