In brief

On Nov. 6, Africa CDC praised Kenya for quickly containing an Ebola case, noting nine confirmed cases and two deaths and high surveillance standards. Officials warned that the Bundibugyo outbreak is still expanding and could spread further into the Democratic Republic of Congo. They urged member states to close preparedness gaps and speed up the disbursement of pledged funds.

On November 6, Nairobi‑based experts at the Africa CDC commended Kenya’s rapid containment of an imported Ebola case, while warning of the continued spread of the Bundibugyo strain into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Africa CDC officials said Kenya’s response has been “quick and efficient,” setting a continental standard for outbreak control.

Kenya reported its first imported Ebola case on Oct 6. At week 25 it had nine confirmed cases and two deaths, a test‑positivity rate of 1.35 percent, and no new cases since Oct 19. The first five patients have since been discharged from treatment centres.

The ongoing multi‑country crisis has reached 10,699 confirmed cases and 5,202 deaths, a case‑fatality rate of 48.6 percent, and 2,900 recoveries, making it the fastest‑growing and second‑largest outbreak on record, Africa CDC data show.

Wessam Mankoula of Africa CDC added:

This is a time for all our member states to invest in preparedness and readiness. Having an imported case should not push us to panic as long as we have the minimum capacity at all critical preparedness pillars. Each country should have a strong surveillance system, and screening at points of entry to detect cases quickly. We need to invest in laboratory capacities and in designated facilities to treat the first few cases.

Amid the progress in Kenya, Africa CDC highlighted the Bundibugyo outbreak’s continued growth and its spread into the DRC, where health authorities are concerned about the disease’s potential to spread further.

Officials said gaps remain in infection prevention and control, case management, and logistics. They urged member states to accelerate the disbursement of pledged funds to strengthen these critical pillars.

The Africa CDC’s praise underscores the need to maintain vigilance and invest in surveillance, laboratory capacity, and treatment facilities, warning that prepared systems can prevent panic and save lives.
