From Quiz Show Winner to Champions League Coach in 20 Years
On Thursday, Valdas Dambrauskas starts his first Champions League match in Old Trafford, standing where he once watched the pitch as a 25‑year‑old visitor to the Manchester United Soccer Schools.
The Lithuanian coach’s journey began in 2002 when he answered a question on the local Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? quiz and took home 4,000 litas (about £725). The cash saved for a student visa allowed him to settle in London, study coaching at London Metropolitan University and begin a dream that had started in his home country.
His first break came when Manchester United Soccer Schools hired him to coach residential courses from 2004 to 2009. Despite juggling four jobs—gardener, pub floor cleaner, sports development officer and manager—he kept his eyes on the goal of full‑time coaching. In 2010 he moved back to Lithuania, where he won two league titles and three national cups with Zalgiris Vilnius, before taking charge of clubs in Latvia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Hungary.
In 2025, the Azerbaijani club Sabah hired Dambrauskas after a fairy‑tale run through the Champions League qualifiers, including a dramatic 5‑2 win over Hapoel Beer‑Sheva with a stoppage‑time hero. Sabah finished their season with a league and cup double, bringing Dambrauskas’ trophy tally to 13 across five countries.
How a Game Show Gave Him His Break
The money from the quiz was not a windfall for riches, but six months’ wages in Lithuania. It enabled him to get a coaching badge, start volunteering with local children and showcase his abilities to clubs in the UK. John Shiels of the Manchester United Foundation gave him a second route into football, saying he had a rare combination of passion and determination.
From the Mojito of Multiple Jobs to Champions
Dambrauskas lived a life of up to three or four jobs to make ends meet while raising two children. Yet every week he went to practice sessions and attended coaching courses, eventually becoming the first Lithuanian to earn a UEFA coaching licence through the London Football Association.
Back to Old Trafford
"When I hear about Old Trafford I think of opportunities," he says. "In England I learned from the best, and now I get to put that knowledge to use in the Champions League. It's beyond my imagination to see my team against Dortmund, Barcelona or Napoli on the same ground where I was once a child swinging through gates as a visitor.”
