Immigration agents have arrested Superintendent Ian Andre Roberts of Des Moines, Iowa, the largest school district in the state, accusing him of overstaying his student visa. Roberts was captured under a fugitive warrant by ICE and also faces charges for possessing a firearm.

Officials reveal that Roberts is from Guyana and has been in the US on a student visa since 1999, which expired in 2020. Although the school district asserts he is a key member of their team, they are presently unaware of the specifics regarding his arrest.

This incident underscores a larger crackdown on immigration policies under President Donald Trump's administration, further complicating community dynamics. It's reported that Roberts has been jailed at an immigration detention center in Des Moines.

Evidence collected during his arrest included a loaded handgun and significant cash. The Iowa State Patrol played a role in his apprehension after he fled from police in a school vehicle. Previously, he had a weapons charge from 2020 and a deportation order is already in place for 2024.

Notably, Roberts has held various educational roles across four states and was an athlete for Guyana at the Sydney Olympics. As local officials search for clarity, school board members have expressed their commitment to understanding the facts while acknowledging Roberts' contributions to the community.
