German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warns that those behind drone attacks and other hostile acts against Germany will pay the price.
On 4 August a drone carrying an explosive device was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Police defused the bomb after the detonator failed – a near miss that highlights how dangerous these attacks can be.
Investigators suspect Russian involvement, but the German government has not blamed Moscow directly. Moscow denies any role.
Merz said the incident showed Germany was facing a very real threat and was increasingly being targeted. He added that attackers are “ruthless, accepting severe property damage, injuries, and fatalities.”
To beat the threat, Germany plans stronger drone defences and will empower its security services to strike back abroad – including hacking adversary servers.
The Chancellor reaffirmed Germany’s backing for Ukraine, calling for peace talks while maintaining steadfast support for the war effort.
These moves come after a series of unauthorized drone flights over sensitive sites such as military bases, airports, and energy terminals in Germany.
