The 18‑year‑old construction worker, Kobe, was shocked. He described the gold as “just when we saw a gold nugget, we realised it was something bigger.” His crew immediately stopped work, called local police and decided they couldn’t keep so much treasure.
The property belongs to the charity CAW Oost‑Vlaanderen, which helps people in Dendermonde. Their director, Geert Hillaert, said he hoped the gold might one day fund the charity’s projects. Meanwhile, the police warned anyone who visits the site to stay away, as the gold has been moved to a safe location.
According to Belgian law, the finder and the property owner each have a chance to claim the treasure. If nobody claims it in five years, the hoard will be divided between the builders and the charity; if it's linked to a crime, the station may take it.
