In brief

Ukraine's postal company, Ukrposhta, is shaking up the world of stamps with cheeky designs that reflect their defiance in the face of adversity.

Ukrainian postage stamps are making headlines with a unique blend of humor, patriotism, and a touch of irreverence. One of their most famous stamps features a soldier giving a middle finger to a Russian warship, a nod to Ukraine's resistance during the early days of Russia's invasion. Despite breaking traditional philatelic rules, the stamp sold out in just a week after its release, especially significant as the warship depicted was sunk shortly after.Ihor Smilyansky, the head of Ukrposhta, embraced this risky creative avenue to boost morale, stating that humor serves as a "fighting force" for Ukrainians. Other popular stamps include one showing a tractor pulling a captured Russian tank, with the phrase "Good evening, we’re from Ukraine," which has sold around eight million copies. Stamps featuring the much-loved mine-sniffing dog, Patron, raised significant funds for mine-clearing equipment and animal shelters, showcasing a practical side to their creativity. Even a Banksy-inspired stamp contributed to building bomb shelters. Experts note that such expressive and often rude imagery is unique to Ukrainian stamps, attracting global collectors who appreciate their strength and character during turbulent times. As one collector stated, these stamps reflect a spirit that remains unyielding to the turmoil surrounding the nation.
