In Singapore, the Ah Ma Flippa Ball team—where "Ah Ma" translates to grandmother—is making waves in the sports scene. This lively group of women, mostly in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, takes part in a modified water polo game known as flippa ball. On a recent Tuesday practice, players were seen playfully tussling over the ball, sparking laughter and lively banter, with a coach teasing them about their rugby-like antics.

Singapore's approach to aging has evolved significantly, with life expectancy climbing to 84 years. Approximately one-fifth of the population is over 65, prompting the government to enhance support for older citizens. Strategies include increasing the retirement and re-employment ages, offering cash payouts for seniors, and sending "Silver Generation Ambassadors" to encourage older adults to stay active.

Launched in 2016, the flippa ball initiative aims to create a fun and engaging environment for seniors. The idea sparked when a sports official noticed Ting Kum Luen, the team’s coach, instructing children. Despite initial doubts, the program has flourished, showing that age is just a number when it comes to having fun and staying fit. With cheerleading squads and esports teams also emerging, Singapore’s seniors are proving they can lead vibrant and active lives!
