Russia’s new, high‑speed drones hit Kyiv each night, outpacing defenders and reshaping the war’s tech landscape.

In August Russia fired dozens of fast jet‑powered drones nightly, surprising Ukraine’s air forces. The Geran‑3 drones cruise over 300 mph, outpacing interceptors and delivering larger warheads. Kyiv is racing to develop counter‑missiles while Russia expands launch sites near its border. The shift from cheap drones to almost‑cruise missiles turns them into a cheaper, quicker strike weapon.

Russia’s new Geran‑3 jet‑powered drones have taken to nightly flights over Ukraine’s capital, with one launch in August reaching 2,800 drones in a single night, the highest level seen in recent months.

These drones can cruise over 300 mph – faster than any Ukrainian interceptor – and carry larger warheads, turning them into a cheap, rapid‑strike alternative to costly cruise missiles.

Ukraine’s air force, which previously intercepted 94 % of long‑range drones, now struggles to keep up. Chief military officers have issued a call for new missile systems capable of matching the jet drones’ speed.

At the same time, satellite imaging shows Russia extending launch facilities near its Oryol border location, ready to unleash these fast drones on Ukrainian targets.
