Rex Heuermann receives three life sentences
On June 17 a judge in Riverhead handed down the maximum punishment for the Gilgo Beach serial killer, Rex Heuermann. He was sentenced to three consecutive life terms for first‑degree murder and a 25‑year‑to‑life sentence for four second‑degree murders.
Heuermann, 62, admitted to strangling and binding eight women and scattering their remains across Long Island’s secluded beaches from 1993 to 2010. The victims included Melissa Barthelemy, 24, and Karen Vergata, 34.
During the hearing, families spoke of lifelong devastation. One mother recalled phone calls from the killer that detailed how she let the remains rot, a chilling moment that left the courtroom in silence.
Police angered the public with a decade of investigation and accusations of a slow response to victims who were sex workers. The breakthrough came last year when DNA found on a pizza box linked Heuermann to the murders, leading to his arrest in 2023.
The judge expressed deep emotion, saying “get him out of here” before ending the session. The courtroom erupted in cheers as the sentence was delivered.
Heuermann accepted responsibility, acknowledging that his words now had no meaning. He showed no repentance; when asked if he was sorry, he answered “yes”.
The case has left a lasting impact. Victim relatives and their children remain grieving, while the court feels pressure for a swift closure to innocent lives lost.
