Kenya’s first Ebola death has been confirmed today

A Kenyan national who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the past seven years fell ill, was treated in several hospitals in the DRC and travelled to Nairobi on Saturday. He underwent routine screening at the main airport and was admitted to a hospital where tests found the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.

More than 4,000 people have already died from Ebola in the DRC this year, making this the second deadliest outbreak ever recorded.

The incident highlights why airports and travel hubs need strict screening and rapid response plans when the world still battles contagious outbreaks.
