Fire Unfolds at Bayahibe Resort
A massive blaze erupted early Friday at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in the town of Bayahibe, sending thick black smoke over the Caribbean coast.
Reconstructive drones captured the wide spread of flames across multiple buildings; the fire was so intense that emergency services and hotel staff rushed guests to safer locations. A 46‑year‑old Italian tourist lost her life in the incident, while three other guests were taken to medical facilities and six were treated on-site.
Rapid Evacuation and Local Response
The resort’s staff, along with local emergency responders, evacuated almost 1,700 guests to other hotels, a successful evacuation that prevented further casualties.
The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center reported that the blaze was brought under control quickly, thanks to a combination of windy conditions and the flammable thatched roofs that aided the spread.
International Assistance
The Italian ambassador to the Dominican Republic met the deceased woman’s husband at the hospital. Ansa reported the embassy’s support for roughly 285 Italian tourists at the resort, issuing emergency passports and arranging flights home.
Hotel’s Statement
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts confirmed one guest died and thanked staff for safely escorting guests. The independently run hotel will remain closed until further notice as investigations continue.
Impact on Tourism
Authorities say that tourism activities in Bayahibe and nearby areas were not affected, and the town remains known for its clear waters and sandy beaches.
