A 35‑year‑old woman was seriously injured after a shark bite at Coogee Beach in Sydney. Police said emergency services were called on Saturday morning when the shark struck.
She was pulled from the water by members of the public who began first aid, suffering serious arm and leg injuries. After the rescue, she was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
Several nearby beaches were closed as a precautionary measure following the incident. Eyewitness Nicola Logan described a massive pool of blood and frantic efforts to bring her back to shore.
Australia records more shark attacks than many other places, with almost 1,300 incidents since 1791 and 260 deaths. Popular surf spots often have shark‑protection measures to keep swimmers safer.
