Breathtaking footage shows wide‑scale devastation, with many baby seals in the water.
Scientists count at least 13,359 seal pups dead, leaving more than 75 % of the island’s young population wiped out. The losses were mainly in the southern elephant seal group, with smaller impacts on king and gentoo penguins.
The H5N1 strain reached Heard and McDonald Islands around August, likely carried by migratory birds from the French‑owned Crozet Islands. Australia has had no cases on the mainland, but officials say the virus might travel further and plan to keep checking.
The research, published on BioRxiv, is still under review but shows a pattern similar to other sub‑Antarctic islands where seal populations suffer heavy losses from bird flu.
