A 35‑year‑old woman was seriously injured after a shark bite at Coogee Beach in Sydney, police said.
NEWS: Emergency services were dispatched Saturday morning when the shark attacked. Bystanders pulled the victim from the water and administered first aid.
She was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital, where doctors treated her for severe arm and leg injuries. Several surrounding beaches were closed as a precautionary measure.
Eyewitness Nicola Logan told Reuters a “massive pool of blood” appeared in the water, followed by a frantic effort to rescue the woman.
The incident comes after recent shark attacks in Australia, including last week’s fatal bite on a diver in Perth and a May fatality of a father near Perth.
Since 1791, Australia has recorded almost 1,300 shark attacks, 260 of which were fatal.
Popular beaches in the country usually have shark‑guarding measures in place. Stay alert and follow local safety guidelines when swimming.
