Mamdani’s Blitz: NYC Democrats Sweep Primaries
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s progressive nominees have taken the city’s Democratic primary, defeating established incumbents and shifting power leftward.
In the 10th district, Dan Goldman—an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune—was ousted by Brad Lander, a former city comptroller who decried Israel’s Gaza policy as genocide.
Other Mamdani‑endorsed candidates, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez and doctoral student Darializa Avila Chevalier, won their districts new, challenging the status quo.
The victories underline a growing appetite in New York for politicians who prioritize workers, oppose immigration enforcement, and confront large‑scale inequality.
National voices differ—House leaders caution that a leftward surge may not translate into broader electoral success, yet the street shows a clear demand for fresh leadership.
The primaries also attracted outside commentary: Trump lampooned Mamdani as “communist,” while Senator Sanders applauded Lander’s “vision of politics.”
