Meta pulls the new AI image tool that let users remix other public accounts mid‑roll

On Tuesday, Meta released Muse Image, an AI that let Instagram users tag any public account and instantly generate AI‑altered photos from that account’s content. The feature was supposed to offer “creative control” over what could be referenced in new AI content.

Like 30 minutes after launch, users and unions – including SAG‑AFTRA and Privacy International – slammed the idea, arguing that the tool let anyone harvest a public persona’s likeness for free. “It’s a win for our members and all Instagram users,” said SAG‑AFTRA, calling the move a “miscalculation of public sentiment.”

Meta admitted it had not fully considered the backlash, saying it was “limited to Instagram” but that it planned more AI features for WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger. The company swiftly announced the tool would be “no longer available” and issued an apology for not listening to feedback. It is now unclear what safeguards, if any, will be added before further AI integration.
