On 12 Aug, Lily Hooper, 18, left her Sydney home to walk in Nattai National Park. By 10 pm she hadn’t returned, and her family reported her missing.

For eight full days, NSW Police drove into dense bushland with the help of PolAir, the Rescue Unit, Trail Bike Unit, Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, the Rural Fire Service, National Parks & Wildlife Service and close to 100 members of the ADF.

At 11:30 local time on the final day, officers found Lily’s body among thick vegetation in the Southern Highlands. The Premier, Chris Minns, first told parliament she was alive, then corrected himself, saying the body had been found. He apologized to the hearing.

Assistant Police Commissioner Joseph Cassar explained that families received a delayed report, and that he wished the clock could be turned back. He did not give details beyond how a brief briefing took place.
