In a café at the University of Texas at Austin, a group gathered recently to discuss disturbing news from Secretary of State Marco Rubio about plans to revoke student visas for Chinese nationals studying in critical fields. This was highlighted alongside a proposed Republican bill to outright ban visas for Chinese students.

According to Xiaobo Lü, a government professor, even if these proposals don’t materialize, the negative impact is already felt. He shared that Chinese students are increasingly wary of pursuing their education in the U.S., fearing interruptions to their studies.

Students echoed this concern, with some opting for local universities over prestigious American institutions. One recounts turning down offers from top journalism schools to attend the University of Hong Kong instead. As uncertainty looms, many are reconsidering their paths. Reports from the University of Texas indicate several aspiring graduate students from China have withdrawn their applications due to these concerns, with current students afraid to voice their opinions on the matter, highlighting a climate of apprehension in the academic environment.
