A former high-ranking Russian general, Lt Gen Vadim Shamarin, has been sentenced to seven years in a maximum security penal colony for taking bribes. He was arrested last year amid a significant anti-corruption drive within Russia's defense ministry initiated by the Kremlin. Investigators revealed that Shamarin accepted approximately 36 million roubles (around £331,000) in kickbacks from a company that produces communications equipment between 2019 and 2023. In return, the general allegedly facilitated larger state contracts for the company.

Prior to his arrest, Shamarin served as the deputy chief overseeing the army’s signals corps and military communications. Following his sentencing, which also included a seven-year ban from public service and the loss of his military rank, the court ordered the confiscation of the 36 million roubles he gained illegitimately.

Shamarin was one of many senior officials detained during a crackdown on defense ministry corruption, which also saw the arrests of deputy defense minister Timur Ivanov and Lt Gen Yuri Kuznetsov. The anti-corruption initiatives intensified after President Vladimir Putin replaced long-standing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in May 2024 with Andrei Belousov, an economist without military experience, signaling a potential shift in military oversight amid concerns about efficiency and integrity in the armed forces.
