Kenya's capital, Nairobi, is famous for its warm tropical climate, but there’s one exceptional spot: the Panari Hotel’s ice rink, home to the Kenya Ice Lions, the country’s first and only ice hockey team. Founded in 2016, the Ice Lions are making history by becoming the fifth African team to join the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Team captain Benjamin Mburu expressed disbelief: “I never imagined I could play ice hockey in Kenya.”

Despite the challenges of practicing in a warm region, the Ice Lions are determined to improve their skills and compete internationally. The sport, which is less popular in East Africa, was introduced by a group of expats aiming to inspire locals. Training can be tough, with only one hour at the rink costing about $100, which limits practice sessions to once a week.

The Ice Lions have captured public interest and attracted sponsorships through their involvement in international events. A transformative trip to Canada introduced them to NHL stars and greatly boosted their funding and equipment support. Recently, they celebrated success in a South African exhibition tournament, proving their potential on larger platforms.

Dedicated to growing the sport locally, the Ice Lions hold weekend clinics for young aspiring players. They even dream of establishing a female team. With the goal of representing Kenya at the Winter Olympics, the Ice Lions declare: “The Kenyan flag must fly on ice.”
