PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The search is intensifying in Providence following a horrifying shooting that claimed the lives of two students at Brown University. Authorities released a suspect after determining key evidence pointed elsewhere, presenting a setback for the investigation.

On Monday, Mayor Brett Smiley provided an update, assuring the community that no further credible threats have emerged since the incident. The police are now canvassing for video surveillance footage to identify the gunman who opened fire in a packed classroom.

The attorney general underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “We have a murderer out there.” Initial reports had led to the detention of a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin, but after further investigation, he was let go.

The chaos erupted during exam week, as the shooter fired more than 40 rounds using a 9mm handgun, leaving nine students injured, several critically. One of the wounded has since been released, while others remain in stable conditions.

In response to the shooting, all classes and exams have been canceled for the remainder of the semester, with a community vigil scheduled to honor the victims.

The university administration and local officials are working hard to support the affected students and reassure the campus community as they grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event.
