At least 20 Palestinians, including several children and a paramedic, have been killed and almost 40 others wounded in Israeli strikes in Gaza, hospitals say. The Israeli military said tanks and aircraft carried out precise strikes against what it called terrorists who opened fire on troops in the north of the strip, seriously wounding an officer.
The attack occurred near the Yellow Line, where Israeli forces are stationed in Gaza, and has been described as a blatant violation of a three-month-old ceasefire deal with Hamas. Hamas alleged that Israel is using the shooting as a flimsy pretext to justify continued aggression.
Al-Shifa hospital reported receiving 13 bodies, including five children, who were reportedly killed when tents and homes in the Zeitoun and Tuffah neighborhoods were struck. Mourners at the hospital's courtyard shared heart-wrenching stories of loss, with one family man lamenting the loss of his son and niece amid what he described as an attack on innocent civilians.
The situation worsened in Khan Younis, where Nasser hospital registered four fatalities, including a child, from strikes on tents. Among the additional casualties was paramedic Hussein al-Samiri, who died while helping victims of a prior strike, underscoring the risks faced by first responders in the area. The International Committee of the Red Cross condemned the attack as a grave violation of humanitarian law.
Tensions between Israel and Hamas have escalated, with accusations from both sides regarding ceasefire violations. Since the onset of hostilities triggered by a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the Gaza health ministry reports over 71,820 fatalities in response to Israeli military actions.
