In brief

Recent data shows a significant increase in rainfall in the eastern U.S. over the past decades, leading to more severe storms.

As climate change intensifies, the eastern United States is experiencing heavier rainfall and severe storms, setting off alarms for weather experts. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that between 1991 and 2020, the eastern regions saw a steady increase in average rainfall compared to previous decades. In contrast, the western U.S. is receiving less precipitation than ever before. This phenomenon aligns with predictions from climate scientists who believe that warming temperatures will result in wetter areas getting even wetter, while drier ones will experience increased dryness. While individual storms can't be directly attributed to climate change, experts warn that rising global temperatures mean warmer air holds more moisture, leading to heavier and more intense rainfall events. The World Meteorological Organization highlights that the last decade marked the hottest recorded period in nearly 200 years. “We’re seeing a clear trend where heavy rain events are becoming more serious,” stated Deanna Hence, a climate meteorology professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. With climate change infiltrating weather patterns, our future may hold an even heavier downpour than we see today.
