SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket made a surprising splash on Christmas Island after its July 24 test flight from Texas. The 52‑metre long vehicle ended up bobbing off the island’s coast in the Indian Ocean, catching the eye of locals who mistook it for a ship at first.
David Watchorn, chair of the Christmas Island Tourism Association, said he was stunned when he saw a “space rocket” being towed by a boat. Some residents hurried out of work to catch a glimpse, while others lined up on their own boats to get a closer look at the debris.
“It’s really incredible to think about what it’s been through,” Watchorn told the BBC. “The more you look at it, the more fascinating it becomes.”
The sighting highlights how far SpaceX rockets travel, even when they don’t touch down where expected. It also gives a young audience a front‑line view of spaceflight during an unexpected adventure at sea.
