A massive nor’easter slammed the northeastern United States over the weekend, beating up New York City and New Jersey with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous coastal flooding.
The storm’s worst hit was Brooklyn, where a 56‑year‑old NYCHA employee named Leighton Brown was struck by a falling tree and the only fatality of the outbreak.
The National Weather Service warned that low‑lying shoreline areas could see roads underwater, homes flooded and businesses crippled, and issued evacuation orders for some communities.
More than 160,000 homes lost power, and flights at major airports were delayed or halted, with over 2,400 cancellations reported by FlightAware.
The east coast’s entertainment schedule was hit hard: a Red Bull New York vs. St Louis City SC soccer match was called off, and the Global Citizen Festival headline act at New York City’s Central Park was cancelled. Ed Sheeran’s Boston concert was also taken out for safety reasons.
Officials urged residents to stay inside, avoid traveling in flooded streets and keep distracted by updates on weather apps and social media for real‑time alerts.
