Multiple people have fallen ill after opening a 'suspicious package' delivered to the base of operations for Air Force One.

A spokesperson for Joint Base Andrews (JBA) in Maryland, near Washington DC, stated that the building where the package was opened was evacuated, and those who fell ill were later found to be in stable condition by medical staff.

The package is reported to have contained an unidentified white powder, as noted by CNN sources familiar with the investigation.

The air base typically houses the US presidential aircraft and supports trips for the president.

The JBA spokesperson mentioned that both the building where the package was opened and a connecting building were evacuated 'as a precaution' and a cordon was established around the area.

First responders arrived at the scene, confirmed there were no immediate threats, and normal operations have since resumed. An ongoing investigation is in progress.

Initial tests conducted by a Hazmat team did not detect any hazardous materials, according to CNN. They are also looking into political propaganda included within the package.

Details regarding the specific nature of the illness among those near the package remain unclear.
