SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A devastating mass shooting occurred early Sunday in Shreveport, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight children in a domestic violence incident.

This shooting is now recognized as the deadliest in the U.S. in over two years. The victims, aged from just one year old to 14, were targeted in multiple homes, with some being related to the gunman.

Shreveport Police spokesperson Chris Bordelon described the scene as ‘extensive’ and unlike anything seen before, urging for community patience during the ongoing investigation.

The suspect, who has not been publicly named, is an adult male who fled the scene following the shootings but was later killed by police during a chase. Authorities are still piecing together details from the several crime scenes located south of downtown Shreveport.

“This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” stated Tom Arceneaux, the city’s mayor. Louisiana State Police are now involved in the investigation, as local law enforcement continues to gather evidence, even calling for anyone with information to come forward.

The emotional impact on the community is palpable, with leaders expressing deep grief and prompting discussions about domestic violence and its impacts on families. Governor Jeff Landry, alongside his wife, expressed their heartbreak about the tragedy and gratitude towards the police and emergency responders.
