Three people have been killed and at least nine others injured in Ukraine's latest attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod, according to its governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov. The strike hit the village of Maslova Pristan early on Wednesday, Gladkov reported. Emergency workers are currently searching for individuals feared to be trapped under the rubble. This marks the third consecutive day of Ukrainian strikes on Belgorod, which have left thousands without power and at least two others dead.
Though Ukraine has not officially commented on the attacks, they have a history of striking targets within Russia during the ongoing war. In retaliation, Russian strikes have also caused power outages in various Ukrainian regions, as noted by Ukraine's energy regulator.
Since the onset of an all-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, there has been a significant increase in hostile operations, particularly targeting energy infrastructure vital as winter approaches. President Zelensky has stated that Russia is specifically targeting Ukraine's critical energy facilities, while Ukrainian forces have intensified their assaults on Russian oil refineries. Current attacks have left many homes in Belgorod, including the village of Maslova Pristan, in ruins, with notable damage to local structures, highlighted by shared images showing a damaged sports center and other impacts on civilian life.
Gladkov mentioned that nearly 40,000 local residents have experienced power outages and that several districts have been affected by a series of missile and drone attacks that damaged homes, vehicles, and essential utilities. Amid the chaos, Zelensky has expressed a commitment to support regions facing the brunt of these ongoing assaults.
