EL PASO, Texas — Victor Manuel Diaz, an immigrant from Nicaragua, tragically lost his life in a Texas immigration detention facility last week. Federal officials reported that Diaz allegedly took his own life at the complex located on Fort Bliss.

The detention facility has garnered negative attention, as it was also the site of another recent death, raising questions about the treatment of detainees. Federal investigation regarding both deaths is ongoing, as many advocate for better conditions for those held in immigration detention.

Diaz entered the U.S. in March and was taken into custody by Border Patrol. After several months in detention, he was given a final order for removal just days before he was found unconscious in his room. Advocacy groups are highlighting the need for mental health support among detainees to prevent such tragedies.
