MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Family members say Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a dedicated ICU nurse at the Veterans Administration, was shot by a federal officer while participating in protests against immigration policies in Minneapolis. The 37-year-old was an avid outdoorsman who cared deeply for others, especially in light of the recent immigration crackdown led by the previous administration. Pretti actively protested the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) which, alongside the recent tragic death of Renee Good at the hands of ICE officers, deeply troubled him.

His father, Michael Pretti, expressed that his son cared about people and felt compelled to voice his concerns through peaceful protests. Despite being a U.S. citizen with no criminal history, the family faced uncertainty and a lack of communication following the incident. The Department of Homeland Security reported that Pretti was shot after approaching officers with a handgun, yet it remained unclear whether he had brandished it during the encounter.

Michael Pretti explained that they had previously advised their son to protest cautiously, ensuring he would not get involved in any dangerous actions.

The family's distress was compounded by their struggle to obtain information regarding the incident. They were informed of the shooting by an Associated Press reporter, and upon reviewing footage, they confirmed it with authorities. With ongoing investigations, the Pretti family seeks justice and clarity regarding the tragic loss of their son.
