US President Donald Trump has announced a total and complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers going into and out of Venezuela. In his post on Truth Social, he denounced the government of Nicolás Maduro as a foreign terrorist organization, accusing it of stealing US assets and engaging in terrorism, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. He declared, Therefore, today, I am ordering A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela.
Trump's comments come just after the US seized an oil tanker near Venezuela, a move indicating rising tensions. He mentioned that Venezuela is “completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America” and warned that the military presence would only increase.
The US military has already killed over 90 people in strikes against purported drug trafficking vessels linked to Venezuela. The Maduro government has constantly accused the US of attempting to appropriate its resources. Recently, the US imposed sanctions on six ships associated with Venezuelan oil and targeted relatives of Maduro. Trump’s order solidifies ongoing pressure from the US against Venezuela, which is home to some of the largest oil reserves in the world.
