U.S. Reports First Two Deaths Linked to ‘Explosive Diarrhea’ Outbreak

Michigan health officials have just confirmed the first two deaths in a nationwide outbreak of cyclospora, a parasite that produces severe diarrhea. The outbreak has already touched 45 states, with nearly 7,000 lab‑confirmed cases.

Cyclospora spreads when people eat food or drink water that’s been contaminated with feces. The tox‑toxic strain is heat‑tolerant up to 70°C, meaning most chlorinated lettuce and hastily washed greens can still carry the pathogen.

What’s Happening?

  • Two deaths in Michigan, both with pre‑existing health conditions.

  • Over 11,000 suspected cases and 193 hospitalisations in the state.

  • Founded on lettuce imported from Taylor Farms in Mexico.

  • Fast‑food giant Taco Bell has removed the lettuce from all US menus.

  • Taylor Farms announced a voluntary recall of the lettuce.

Safety Tips for You

The CDC advises two simple steps to keep you safe:

  1. Wash all produce under running water, even items labeled pre‑washed.

  2. Heat foods to at least 70°C (158 °F) before you eat them.

If you suspect you’ve eaten contaminated food and experience severe stomach cramps or diarrhea lasting more than 48 hours, seek medical help immediately.

The outbreak reminds everyone that food safety starts with simple habits— rinse, cook, and stay informed.
