UEFA says it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino's leadership after FIFA scrapped its controversial plan to sell competition stakes to private investors.
In a statement on Saturday, UEFA welcomed the decision to abandon the scheme, calling it a win for the sport and accusing Infantino of failing to keep promises he made when campaigning to become president in 2016.
FIFA's chief operating officer Kevin Lamour said the organisation was "deceived" by its own staff over the project, and senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned, warning that the deal would mortgage football’s future.
Other confederations joined UEFA’s critique, and FIFA’s only remaining top official — the assistant to Infantino — will need to step up to keep the World Cup budget on track.
