US Marine arrested over murder in Okinawa
A 20‑year‑old US Marine, Devin Jacob Ballard of the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was arrested on suspicion of murder after a 39‑year‑old woman named Yagi Anna was found dead in a hotel in Naha City.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the act a “brutal and heinous” robbery‑murder and urged the US to enforce stricter discipline of its personnel. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi posted his outrage on social media, describing the incident as “utterly inexcusable”.
The US Embassy and the Marine Corps said they were fully cooperating with Japanese authorities and had expressed condolences to the victim’s family. Japan’s foreign ministry summoned the US ambassador to discuss the case.
Okinawa, home to many American bases, has repeatedly demanded that the US prevent such incidents. Governor Genta Koja said the event showed a lack of discipline among US troops and called for stronger measures.
The case has reignited tensions over the US military presence on the island amid local concerns about safety and security.
