In brief

The recall affects popular Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel mugs sold since 2016, with reports of burn injuries prompting the action.

Stanley, a well-known brand famous for its trendy tumblers, is recalling approximately 2.6 million travel mugs due to a potential burn hazard caused by loose lids. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on December 12, 2024, that the recall includes all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action mugs sold in the U.S. from June 2016 to December 2024. The issue arises from the polypropylene lids which can shrink due to heat and torque, leading to detachment during use. These travel mugs, priced between $20 and $50, are widely available on platforms like Amazon, Walmart, and Target, and come in a variety of colors and sizes ranging from 12 to 20 ounces. Reports indicate that there have been 91 incidents worldwide where lids came off during use, including 38 burn injuries in the U.S. Stanley, founded over a century ago in Seattle, has expressed its commitment to quality. The company encourages customers to stop using the mugs immediately and contact them for a free lid replacement. The brand’s products, especially tumblers, have surged in popularity on social media, fueled by influencers and viral trends on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, where the hashtag #StanleyTumbler boasts millions of uses. This recall highlights the importance of consumer safety and underscores Stanley’s resolve to enhance their product quality, ensuring customer satisfaction and safety remains a top priority.
