In brief

John A. Hemingway, the final survivor of the legendary “Few” pilots who defended Britain during World War II, has died at age 105. His heroic actions in the Battle of Britain helped thwart a German invasion and solidified his place in history.

John A. Hemingway, the last known survivor of the few fighter pilots who valiantly defended Britain during World War II, has passed away at the age of 105 in Dublin. Known affectionately as Paddy, he was celebrated for his critical role in the Battle of Britain, which unfolded in the skies over Britain from July to October 1940.In a powerful address to the British House of Commons, Prime Minister Winston Churchill honored pilots like Hemingway, stating, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." With a significant gap in numbers during the Battle, Hemingway flew Hurricane fighters and was instrumental in protecting the British Isles from a German invasion, dubbed Operation Sea Lion.Despite being significantly outnumbered — 749 RAF aircraft against 2,550 Luftwaffe planes — Hemingway and his fellow pilots showcased extraordinary bravery, ultimately hindering Hitler's plans for an aerial assault to enable ground invasion. Though the German Blitz continued into 1941, their resistance was a pivotal moment in WWII.Hemingway, who flew operations across Europe, even found himself shot down four times between 1940 and 1945 and was recognized with Britain's Distinguished Flying Cross for his achievements. With his passing, we remember his legacy and the sacrifices made by countless others during this critical time in history.
